Math by heart

January 13th, 2007

before i bid these messages good bye from my phone’s inbox, i’d like to post these quotes here in my blog. they’re worth reading and rereading. They somehow serve as a testimony that there’s more about math than just algebraic expressions, limits and coninuity, vector fields, gradients, set theory, propositional calculus among others.

* Math tells us three of the saddest love stories: tangent lines that had one chance to meet and then parted forever; parallel lines who were never meant to meet; and assymptotes who can get closer and closer but will never be together. (from Em, math classmate)

here’s a reply about the parallel lines from an orgmate:

*Just because they don’t meet doesn’t mean they are not related. After all that loneliness beongs in the same space. (from Janj)

* How can i show i love you? i won’t be mean and you’re the only one i’ll constantly love.. with Mean=0 and Variance=1! (from Cam, roommate)

*In this big field of life, we may have different generators that shape the lattice of our individuality, but there is always a homomorphism called Friendship that exists between us, and i am willing to be a restricted domain such that the Friendship becomes an isomorphism. (from Janj, orgmate)

*I am sine squared theta and you are cosine squared theta. Together, we are one!

Haha. Mga hirit nga naman.

(P.S. Magdagdag pa kayo para masaya)

Year end report

January 4th, 2007

I guess my goodie-good days are finally coming to a temporary halt. It’s time to refresh my thoughts and prepare myself for a twelve month long journey through the new year. But before completely doing so, I’d like to thank God for His love, guidance and providence the past year 2006.

Marami akong dapat ipagpasalamat. If it were not for the unconditional love and grace of God, wala sana ako dito ngayon.

Pasalamat ako dahil malusog at nasa mabuting kamay sina Mommy, Daddy, Justin, Gerald at ako.  Pasalamat ako dahil bonded pa ang pamilya namin despite the fact na nasa Manila kaming dalawa ni Daddy while sila Mommy ay naiwan sa Dumaguete. Pasalamat ako dahil love and trust abound within our family. Pasalamat ako dahil may mga bestfriend ako sa bahay na napakaloyal at mapagkakatiwalaan… mga pet doggies namin. Man’s bestfriend nga talaga sila.

Pasalamat ako sa mga glorious moments ko… that proves how much dedication, passion, hardwork, sincerity and entrusting your work to God would bear desirable outcomes. Pasalamat din ako sa mga down moments ko… sa mga failures at unmended relationships. all those made me realize that invincible i am not; na i’m a flawed mortal who is worthless without the Supreme One.

All these and more are worth thanking God so much for…

With this, pwede ko nang umpisahan ng payapa at matiwasay ang bagong taon.

MALIGAYANG NEW YEAR SA TANAN

Some ado about nothing

December 24th, 2006

I was at the open check-in counter of Cebu Pacific at the airport when I noticed this guy two persons in front of me. We were carrying the same Compaq targus bag. He’s kinda cute. He keeps glancing around with his Ipod plugged in his ears. Haha. Only to find out that he’s also a UP student coz I saw his ID.  A few minutes later, the same counter was opened for Dumaguete (tamang- tama!), and I was there hoping that he’s also going to Dumaguete. Unfortunately, he wasn’t. I guess I heard he’s flying to Dipolog. And he wasn’t at the same flight where I am. Too bad. Anyway, so much for that guy. What are the chances that I’ll recognize him or even see him in the campus next year? Haha. It’s okay. Anyway, the woman behind me on the line who also happened to be seated two seats away from me in the plane (as always, I’m seated at the window, while she’s at the isle) is Prof. Leonor Briones (I read in her bag tag). Only to find out she’s part of the Silliman Board of Trustees and that she’s also a professor at UP.  Just sharing.

The Best Christmas Present

December 24th, 2006

Gone are the days when I merely see Christmas as a time when toys, clothes and other gifts coated in green and red wrappers sprout like mushrooms beneath the Christmas tree. This Christmas, those nicely wrapped presents aren’t what I’m looking forward to. But still, I’m very much thankful to my loved-ones and friends who have given me gifts, who in their own thoughtful ways never cease sharing with me the blessings they receive.

This Christmas, I decided not to draft any wish list for myself (except for that wish list required for the org), coz I realized that the spirit of Christmas isn’t found in those material gifts I have to satisfy myself with. God has been so good to me like He has always been. For these past months, I’ve been so blessed and overwhelmed with His love that I no longer asked for any Christmas present from Him.

But still, God’s love is so great. Even though I didn’t ask for a present, He still gave me one. One I would never forget and I would cherish as long as I live.

It was Saturday, Dec. 17, a day before my flight back to Dumaguete from Manila. I was at the mall with my relatives when I got a text message from my Dad telling me my youngest brother had an accident. After lunch, I called my Mom and asked about what happened to Gerald. From what I gathered, this was what happened.

On Friday evening, my 15 year old brother Gerald asked permission from Mommy to go out to do something. He went out using the motorcycle of Justin, my 17 year old brother. At around my Mom’s bedtime, Gerald wasn’t home yet. But since he’s done that many times before already my Mom thought Gerald would just sleep over at a classmate’s house.

At around 2:30 am, the phone rang. My Mom got up from bed to answer the call. She thought it was Gerald informing her of his whereabouts. To her surprise, it was somebody from SU Medical Center telling her that her son has just been rushed in from a motorcycle accident. My Mom woke Justin up and together they went to SUMC which is just a five-minute drive from where we live.

At the hospital, they were glad to see Gerald alive with only some bruises and wounds. Even worse was the condition of Gerald’s companion, *Ben who incurred some stitches to close up a wound in the head as big as a one peso coin, some wounds, a fractured wrist and a heavily bruised arm. When Gerald finally recovered from the shock, he looked for the two guys who helped them, and told Mom what happened.

At around 1:30 am, Gerald and *Ben dropped *Pedro, a former classmate to *Pedro’s house. On their way back, *Ben was driving the motorcycle while Gerald was sitting at the driver’s backseat. The deserted road was sloping downwards (near Bishop’s Palace) and a stray dog was eating garbage at the middle of the street. In an effort to avoid the dog, they were thrown out of the motorcycle. After a few minutes, two teenage guys who were walking along the street saw them and hurried to fetch a pedicab. After a while, Gerald and *Ben were brought to SUMC, with the two guys who paid for the pedicab fare and who also drove the motorcycle to SUMC.

Unfortunately, Mom wasn’t able to meet the two guys and wasn’t able to thank them personally and pay them back for the pedicab fare they spent. I’d like to think that they were angels God used to help Gerald and *Ben. If it were not for them, Gerald’s and *Ben’s condition could have been worse; or, the motorcycle could have been stolen. To the two guys who helped my brother, my sincerest thanks to both of you. You are indeed angels in disguise. I’m sure God will continue blessing you and your family just as you’ve been a blessing to us.

The morning after the incident, Gerald’s been okay; he just needs to have his anti-tetanus shot and drink some prescribed anti-biotic to hasten the healing of his wounds; while *Ben, still at the hospital, needs to have some X-rays and stayed until his broken arm and head stitches heal. Justin’s motorcycle just needs to have some plastic parts replaced. Looking at the broken plastic and rubber parts and scratches, one could say that the motorcycle probably flew up in the air, and did a somersault. Whew! So much for a gymnast’s job! With that I’m glad to say that my brother and his companion turned up alive.

That my brother Gerald has miraculously survived the motorcycle accident is one priceless gift I thank God so much for. Indeed, God’s love is so great that He gives us chances to live and gives us blessings regardless if we ask or not.

Because of what He has done and what He has given me, and what He will be doing for me and my family,

I WILL NOT STOP GIVING THANKS TO THE LORD.

two poems

December 11th, 2006

I’m not really a poet and i don’t really have the creative juices to make poems. That’s why i was surprised when, as i was reading through my myspace blog (i can’t believe i had a blog back in high school), i came across some poems that i wrote. I think they’re worth reposting here in my friendster blog since i only make poems everytime Halley’s Comet comes near the earth. Come on, i haven’t written a single poem since i started college.

ANG KALIKASAN

Tingnan mo ang kalikasan
Ito’y napakagandang pagmasdan
Ito’y gawa ng ating Amang Makapangyarihan
Na dapat nating algaan.

Noong mga unang panahon
Ang kalikasan raw ay napakaganda.
Wala pang kahit anong polusyon
Ito’y malinis at alagang-alaga.

Ang mga buhok ay nakabihis
Ng kulay berdeng napakatamis.
Ang mga karagatan ay mayaman
Sa mga isda at tubig halaman.

Ngunit ngayon, ano nang nangyayari?
Ito’y sinisira ng mga taong mapang-api
Tapon dito, kalat doon
Hindi ba’t tayo rin ang may kagagawan ng mga ‘yon?

Hindi man natin aminin
Tayong mga tao rin ang salarin.
Balang araw, kita ri’y makokonsyensya
Sa mga ginagawa nating kahiyahiya.

Sayang naman kung ating sisirain
Ang kalikasang dapat mahalin.
Sana nama’y walang malalang mangyari
Sa kalikasang minamahal ng marami.

[*i think i made this when i was in grade six]

GOSSIPERS’ STANDARDS

It’s really unbecoming
For girls who love to stare,
Who love to look at nowhere,
With nothing good to bare.

All people we can’t please
But still we love to hiss
And as we turn our backs
We blab out to the max

We’re rather inconsiderate
To the victims we attack
Why can’t we wait
Before we strike the bait?

Judging before confirming
All the facts and happenings
Makes us stoop down our level
Like we’re in a place called hell.

wonder wo-ME-n

November 28th, 2006

If i were superEleiza, here are some of the superpowers i wish to have:

*telekinesis - like matilda, i want to bring my concentration ability/ mind power to a higher level

*teleportation - though fitness is my game (read: i walk more than a kilometer per day; i rarely ride toki/ikot jeeps inside the campus, unless i’m so late already or when it’s raining), i can’t avoid the need for such power like when i’m still out somewhere and the dorm curfew is fast approaching.

*invisibility - i’ve always wanted to experience how it feels inside an invisibility cloak like Harry. but according to my physics prof, scientists are already working on some things that can help facilitate invisibility. isn’t that cool?

*xray vision - i wonder how the world will look like when everybody sees everybody like skeletons embedded in black silhouettes.

*extreme flexibility - something like Lasticman’s power. with that, i wouldn’t need spidey’s web ropes anymore.

*et cetera

These are just the basics. I still wish to have some other extraordinary powers. But I guess that will only happen when i reincarnate in an extraterrestrial world where all these powers exist. As of now, i guess i just have to stick with being who i am and making full use of my God-given gifts in order to accomplish things that need to be done.

Happiness at MMC

November 26th, 2006

If there’s one thing i’m glad i did last sem, that was applying for "the org". More formally known as UP Mathematics Majors’ Circle, UPMMC is home to math & nonmath major students alike.

At first, I was a bit indifferent about joining this org. My reasons include the lack of time balancing acads, dorm life and the load we then have to carry as applicants. I can’t imagine myself spending 70 tambay hours, attending org activities, going through the challenge week and the UCD when i first heard of the requirements for application. But as soon as the application process started, i realized it wasn’t that burdensome after all. Spending tambay hours at MB 104 paved way to opening new friendships. There I met students of all sorts who are bonded by the fact that they love, or had loved Math. The application process was by all means no piece of cake. We had to endure some challenges which i couldn’t disclose in this blog due to some org rules and provisions. Nonetheless, I’m proud to say that we [my coapps and i], have done all that we could in order to reap what we sowed.

One of the reasons why i joined an org is that i wanted to have a "home" in UP. True enough, it has been affirmed by the org members that UPMMC is a perfect avenue for building lasting friendships. I hope that also applies to me. So far, i’m starting to believe their claims and what the lyrics of the MMC hymn says which goes:

"…WE’RE NOT JUST AN ORG, WE’RE A FAMILY PA…. UPMMC…"

Blog to blog

November 26th, 2006

Finally! Another blog post after months of being blog-wise dormant. Actually, I was thinking of making an account in blogger but unfortunately, i lack the time and resources to maintain one. There’s no more net connection in our room at the dorm. Poor us. Plus, i don’t know how flash graphics and html what-do-u-call-that work. I guess i’ll just stick with occasional (tama ba spelling?) blogging.
